How Long Can You Drive on a Spare Tire?

Spare Tire on car

Spare tires are invaluable when a current tire blows out, wears down, sustains a sharp object-related puncture, or encounters anything else that leaves it flat. So how long can you drive on a spare tire? The answer depends on the type of spare tire in your trunk. Review how long you can drive on different types of spare tires to stay safe on roads in Prescott, Zumbrota, and everywhere else.

How Long Can I Drive on a Spare Tire: Space-Saver Spare

A space-saver spare tire, or “donut” is the common spare found in vehicle trunks around the country. It is smaller than the average tire and usually part of a new vehicle package. Keep the following in mind when driving with a donut spare tire:

  • Spare tires cannot be driven over 50 miles per hour
  • Spares shouldn’t be driven for more than 70 miles
  • Donut spare tires do not offer as much traction as full-size spare tires

If there are any other restrictions regarding your space-saver spare tire, you will find them on the tire! It is generally a good practice to drive with a space-saver spare tire only until you can schedule a service appointment. Try to make the appointment at our service center as soon as possible to remain safe on roads in Cannon Falls and elsewhere.

How Long Can I Drive on a Spare Tire: Full-Size Spare

The less popular spare tire option, a full-size spare is a typical new truck or SUV accessory. It is unsurprisingly longer than a space-saver spare but you should still adhere to the above guidelines. Unless a full-size spare is the same brand as your other three tires, it can cause traction and subsequently safety issues. As with a donut spare tire, replace a full-size spare with the right tire for your vehicle as quickly as possible.

What is a Run-Flat Tire?

These tires stay inflated after a puncture by a nail or any other sharp object! Run-flat tires cost more than standard tires but offer the following benefits:

  • Remains inflated for about 50 miles after getting punctured
  • More durable than a space-saver tire or full-size spare
